059 - COTTON FABRICS DRYING IN THE SUN IN JAIPUR, Rajasthan, India. (N 26°55' W 75°49')
The state of Rajasthan in northeastern India is an important centre of textile production, renowned for centuries for the crafts of dyeing and printing on cotton and silk fabrics. This activity is primarily practiced by the Chhipa, a community of dyers and painters who use ancestral techniques, decorating with wax and printing by stamping. Silkscreen printing, however, is increasingly used for larger-scale production, and chemical colouring is gradually replacing natural pigments. Craftsmen continue the multiple soakings to fix colours and dry their fabrics in the sun, as seen here in Jaipur, the state capital. The cottons and silks of Rajasthan have been exported since the Middle Ages to China, the Middle East, and Europe, and the international trade continues to flourish. Chhipa women perform this work; 32 percent of India’s workforce is female, and this percentage is increasing.
