The Bilbao Guggenheim Museum opened in 1997, three years after the first stone was laid. The museum is part of a program of urban renewal in this industrial city. Built at a cost of $100 million, the structure was designed by the California architect Frank O. Gehry, with the help of a computer program used in aeronautics. Its glass, steel, and limestone construction, partially covered with titanium, echoes the city’s shipbuilding tradition. Encompassing a total area of 250,000 square feet (24,000 m2), the museum has 118,000 square feet (11,000 m2) of exhibition space divided among 19 halls, including one of the world’s largest galleries (310 x 100 feet, or 130 x 30 m). Like many American or European museums managed by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, a well-known patron of the arts, the museum displays contemporary works of art.
