Washed by the Tyrrenian Sea, Tuscany in central Italy is one of the loveliest regions of the entire peninsula. Tuscany owes some of its fame to its hills, covered with vineyards, olive trees, corn and barley fields and punctuated with medieval villages. They also gave their flesh to erect the cities of the region, furnishing the clay whose characteristic red-ochre pigment is known as "burnt Siena." Tuscans have long been aware of the charms of the gentle harmony of their landscapes and of the threats posed by land speculation, industrialization, and mass tourism, with 37 million visitors in 2000. They were pioneers in Europe in choosing to preserve and profit from this natural and cultural patrimony by developing "agritourism" at an early date. Local enterprises, especially artisans (leather, marble, textiles, and furniture), now adhere to the standard known as "SA 8000," which testifies to good ecological and social practices.
