(PORTRAIT) 225 - Bottle racks near Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, Germany. (N 52°20' E 10°20')
Not far from Braunschweig, in northern Germany, an avalanche of mineral water, beer, fruit juice, and carbonated drinks of all kinds is spread out on a grocery business’s warehouse lot. In the world beverage industry, the bottled water market, estimated at $22 billion per year, leads all competitors. The most basic of drinks, once it is bottled, is increasingly successful; world consumption is growing by 7 percent per year (15 percent in the Asian/Pacific region). To contain the 89 billion litres of mineral water distributed in the world every year, 1.5 million tons of plastic are used. As for alcoholic drinks, their abuse maintains the universal scourge of alcoholism, a symptom of the despair and social malaise caused by poverty and unemployment. In Russia, alcoholism keeps male life expectancy at 59 years, as opposed to 72 for women.
