Take Action
Eat Seasonal produce
All fruit and vegetables have seasonal lifecycles - vast amounts of land on the other side of the world have been deprived of growing the crops their people need, so that they can produce mange tout for our Sunday roasts and Satsumas for our summers. But that’s not the only issue. One Kilo of New Zealand apples accounts for its own weight in carbon dioxide transmissions by the time it arrives in the UK, while 10 litres of orange juice need 1 litre of fuel (for processing and transport) as well as 220 litres of water for irrigation and cleaning. Buying about two pounds (1kg) of fresh green beans in the winter involves emissions of almost 28.6 pounds (13kg) of carbon dioxide. Buying locally is one of the most important things you can do to improve the environment. Support local agricultural communities, buy seasonal products and avoid food miles.
