Dover Castle, Kent, (N 51° 07'46" E 1° 19'18")

Standing proud on the white cliffs, over looking the port, Dover Castle boasts the largest keep in Britain. The Motte on which
it stands is now known as Castle Hill. The original castle is thought to be Saxon but the site on which it stands is believed to
have been occupied since the Iron Age. In 1066 the castle was set alight by William the Conqueror’s men. However, after the
damage was assessed he decided to repair and rebuild it and call it his own. It has been constantly in use since then, during which
time the defenses have been improved on at least five occasions. Underneath the castle there is a network of tunnels created in
the eighteenth century which were used as barracks for soldiers. After this they were used by the the Coast Blockade Service to
help combat smuggling and then they were left abandoned for over a century. During the second world war the tunnels were
converted for use as an air raid shelter, a command centre and an underground hospital.
