Houses of Parliament, Westminster, (N 51°29'58" W 000°07'29")

The Houses of Parliament, sometimes referred to as the Palace of Westminster, stands on the site of an original royal palace
built by King Canute who reigned from 1016 to 1035. It was later rebuilt by Edward the Confessor in the 11th century who
also founded Westminster Abbey at the same time, and the area became known as Westminster (West Monastery). The
Palace of Westminster became the chief royal residence but it was also used by the two Houses of Parliament and as a law
court. The most famous breach of security in its history was during 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his fellow Roman Catholic
conspirators tried to destroy the palace and murder protestant King James I, his family and most of the aristocracy during the
State Opening of Parliament. Today, the occasion is marked each year on the 5th November with firework displays across the
country. In 1834, most of the Palace was destroyed again by fire. A Royal Commission was appointed and after studying 97
proposals, the world famous, neo-Gothic style buildings that grace the north bank of the Thames today were completed in
1847 to a design by Charles Barry. They have become a symbol for the nation and are the centre for governing the country.
