Gouthwaite Reservoir was one of three reservoirs constructed during the late 19th century to supply water to the population of Bradford which was growing rapidly due to the industrial revolution. It is situated 5.5 kilometres (3.5 miles) upstream of Pateley Bridge, collecting water from the River Nidd and when full, it contains 1,654 million gallons of water. The reservoir is a bird sanctuary and has been designated as an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). It has three viewing areas for bird watchers and is home to many species of birds and waterfowl. During the winter, birds of prey such as Buzzard, Hen Harriers and Red Kites can often be seen and Golden Eagles and Ospreys have also been seen flying overhead. |
