Nestling beneath the cliffs, ten miles south of Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast, is the picturesque fishing village of Staithes. Its name originates from the Viking and means “the landing place”. It is famous for mining, particularly the local jet
rock, fishing and boat building, being at one time among one of the six biggest fishing ports in the country with no less than 80 full time fishing vessels working from it. The harbour itself is sheltered by high cliff tops and has two long breakwaters and a lifeboat station. In 1745 James Cook moved to Staithes and took up the position of a grocer’s apprentice before he moved to Whitby where his ambition to take to the sea flourished. Though the population of Staithes has decreased in recent years, its traditions live on and include a fisherman’s choir and the ‘Nightgown parade’. It is also said that the ghost of a young girl can be seen wandering the cliff top from which she fell.
