Positioned on the east coast in North Yorkshire, this now thriving seaside town takes its name from the Scandinavian name ‘Skarðaborg’ and was founded in 966AD. In 1066 the town was all but burnt to the ground when King Harald Hardrada from Norway invaded. During his reign, Henry II was responsible for rebuilding the town and also the Castle. During the 13th Century Scarborough was given permission to hold a fair (market) annually which people travelled from far and wide to attend. It went on for 45 days with buyers and sellers often using the bartering system to exchange goods. The traditional fair ceased to exist in 1788. However, smaller festivities are hosted yearly in September to mark the original event.
