The City of London is at the heart of the world’s financial market. Known locally as the Square Mile, it is not only home to modern day skyscrapers housing major business and financial institutions, but also to many historic buildings, statues and monuments. The City is over 800 years old with a fascinating history including the Great Fire of London in 1666, when over 13,000 houses, 87 parish churches and the original St. Paul’s Cathedral were razed to the ground. It’s height of 61.6 metres (202 ft ) is the exact distance from where it stands to the baker’s shop in Pudding Lane where the fire started.The City of London is home to the London Stock Exchange (shares and bonds), Lloyd’s of London (insurance), and the Bank of England. London’s economy generated $452 billion in 2005 and is predicted to rise to $708 billion by 2020 making it the fourth largest city economy in the world behind Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles.
