Wembley Stadium, London
N 51º 33’21” W 0º 16’46”
Up to the year 2000, the skyline of Wembley in north-west London had been dominated by the iconic twin towers of the original Wembley Stadium, but since 2007 it has been replaced by the now famous arch of the new stadium. The new Wembley Stadium opened on 24 March 2007 at a cost of £757 million. With a covered seating capacity of 90,000, it is the largest football stadium in the world and contains more toilets than any other venue in the world - 2,618 to be precise! The famous arch is an amazing 133 metres (436 feet) high; in fact so high that the London Eye could fit underneath it. Apart from major football
matches, the stadium can hold many other events, including major concerts. The original stadium, then called the Empire took only 300 days to construct at a cost of £750,000 and was part of a British Empire Exhibition. Over the years, the stadium was gradually modified and in 1955, floodlights were added. However, due to modern sporting requirements, it was decided that the stadium (which had remained essentially unchanged since 1923) should be replaced and so, in 2000, it finally closed.
