Land’s End, Cornwall. (N 50° 03’ 57” W 5° 42’ 53”)
Whilst planning journeys through Cornwall and Devon, travellers have historically halted at the First and Last Inn situated in Sennen before continuing on horseback or foot along the muddy lanes to Land’s End. The Inn is thought to have been built around 7 centuries ago; and stories of its notorious reputation sympathetic to the smuggling and wrecking activities
continue to be rife along the Cornish coast. Smuggling was at its peak during the beginning of the 1800s; brandy, silk and tea being among the luxury goods smuggled in from France. More recently, popularity amongst tourists took its toll on the natural beauty of the site during the 1970s and 80s, and a large investment was needed to return the barren and eroded site it to its former glory. Peter de Savary purchased Land’s End in 1987, and with the advice of the naturalist David Bellamy, sympathetically developed it in order to retain its natural beauty. Land’s End continues to be the natural starting point for
many “End to End” events, witnessing heart warming and extraordinary journeys, including many sponsored events by celebrities and members of the public alike.
