Portmeirion (N 52°54’, W 04°56’)
Designed by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion was constructed between 1925 and 1973 using a diverse mixture of architectural styles although the overall effect is Italianate. The village is still owned by Williams-Ellis’ descendants, though it is now a charitable trust. Originally the site was a foundry and boatyard which was converted with additional buildings and features incorporating a number of salvaged architectural relics from other locations. The village is also noted for its surrounding gardens and woodland which due to the mild climate contain numerous exotic species. Portmeirion has featured in numerous TV shows and films, the best known being the cult 1960’s series “The Prisoner”. It still attracts many visitors to view the original shooting locations, making the village the top tourist destination in Wales. It is still a working hotel, using the buildings as hotel rooms or self catering apartments and cottages. There is also a variety of shops, a café and a tearoom. Interestingly, Noel Coward wrote Blithe Spirit while staying in the Fountain Suite at Portmeirion.
