Ullswater, Cumbria (N 54º 34’ 36” W 002º 51’ 36”)
Ullswater is the second largest lake in the English Lake District at approximately 9 miles (14.4 km) long and 0.75 miles (1.2km) wide with an average depth of 25.3 m (83 ft). It is in the shape of a Z with three ‘reaches’. The less accessible east side of the lake has some beautiful walks and it was this area that inspired Wordsworth in 1802 to write some of his best known work, including his famous poem popularly known as “Daffodils”. In the summertime, there are four steamers running between Glenridding, Pooley Bridge and Howtown and two of the boats date back to the 19th century. The oldest mechanically driven boat in the world, according to the Guinness book of Records was rescued from the bottom of Ullswater. Built in 1850, Dolly, as she was known, was raised from the lake bed with her boiler and engine almost intact. Most of the lake forms the border between the ancient counties of Cumberland and Westmoreland and is one of the only lakes in Britain to have a noticeable daytime tide.
