Arran has three smaller islands off its shores - Holy Isle, Pladda and Tiny Hamilton Isle which lies around 1.2 km (0.7miles) north of Holy Isle. Holy Isle is around 3km (2 miles) long and around 1km (0.5miles) wide and has a long history as a sacred site. Located on the island is a spring said to have healing properties and the hermit cave of a 6th century monk, St. Molaise. There is also evidence of a 13th century monastery. The Isle of Arran is found in the Firth of Clyde and is the most southerly Scottish island. The landscape is diverse with mountains and lochs in the north and rolling hills and meadows in the south, all surrounded by an amazing coastline. The history of Arran dates so far back that many myths and legends are associated with the island. Visible signs of life have been found dating back to the Neolithic period including many stone circles, standing stones and cairns. These were constructed from this time through to the Bronze Age and Machrie Moor in particular has six stone circles. Folklore suggests that many of the ancient circles of stone were associated with legendary figures and giants. Photograph copyright of Jason Hawkes
