The River Thames is the longest river in England and has a length of 346 km (215 miles) starting from Thames Head in Gloucestershire and flowing into the North Sea at the Thames Estuary. During the 16th and 17th century, the Thames was a major highway between the great royal residences of Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace, the City of London and the City of Westminster where watermen ferried Londoners from landing to landing.. By the 18th century, the river was one of the busiest waterways in the world as London became the centre of the British Empire. During the Victorian era, the population and industries in London grew rapidly with dire consequences to the river. It became so polluted that sittings in the House of Commons at Westminster had to be abandoned due to the stench and the river became known as "The Great Stink"! A huge network of 134 km (83 miles) of sewers was constructed to carry waste to the sea and the clean up of the river began. Today, it is believed that the River Thames is the cleanest it has been for the last 130 years. Photograph copyright of Jason Hawkes
